The Military-Industrial Complex

This link details one of the themes I’d like to explore in my writing, i.e. how decisions made on an economic basis can threaten the lives of troops in the field.

The Israelis already have a system that is capable of defeating incoming RPGs with a greater than 90% success rate, and yet, our military is reluctant to implement it.  Why?  Allegedly, Raytheon, a major defense contractor, is said to be manufacturing a similar system.

We could save lives in the field NOW, or at least very soon.  Why should our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, and fathers and mothers die needlessly to line some Pentagon bureaucrat’s pocket?  What is the price of Raytheon stock measured in American blood?

We are pursuing a worthy goal in securing Afghanistan and Iraq.  I fully support our efforts there, and further believe them to be right, despite the misinformation and propaganda fed to us from the current administration.  The unspoken corollary to that is that I expect our government and our military to support our people there, to the best of their ability.  Let outrageously creative Israelis, experienced in counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism operations provide us with a system that saves American lives.  Once that’s in place, if we’re concerned about security, let’s build our own.

But only after our boys and girls are safe.

So true Peter,I would also like to see a fence on our southern boarder. That would cost alot less than cleaning up after a major attack.

Ah the war machine. As the good people of the US are out spending their hard earned dough on plasma t.v.’s, drowning themselves in the abyss that it is to be ‘in debt’, the ever present military is bidding out contracts for the new wars we haven’t even fought.

I’m torn. As much as I would like to see military contracts go to American companies, to benefit our own economy with jobs, I really want to protect those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I’m in agreement here, that we should start saving lives with an effective system *now*, instead of lining the investor pockets with more cash.

It’s weird, speaking of sci-fi, all those futuristic stories that portray America as a global dominating corporation, isn’t really that far away. How long before we start firing US citizens for not being productive enough. (but that’s an entirely different subject) :)
