Nineteen (19) year old mayor elected

Muskogee, OK elected a nineteen year old Freshman attending school at the University of Oklahoma to be its mayor. Muskogee is southeast of Tulsa, OK and has nearly 40,000 residents.

Could it get any crazier than that?

No, I think it’s great. We should elect all our mayors while they’re young and still know everything.

  2. GK says:

And he won with 70% of the vote!

He can’t do any worse than the mayor of my city..

  3. Vince says:

It’s good to see younger wanting to hold elective office. I think it’s great. And his goals are openness of government and keeping citizens better informed of city operations. A refreshing change.

Not gonna lie… As little as I generally care about political BS (No offense, my friends), that’s pretty bad arse.

I noticed the vote counts yesterday in the paper… The City of Muskogee had a whopping turnout of ~5300 people. He had about 3800 votes.

Hell half of those could’ve been from his High School class.

I hope he does well, but I can’t help but think about those bumper stickers that popped up after the 2000 Presidential Elections..

“I bet you’ll vote next time Hippy!”

In a discussion with friends last night, the one thing we were concerned with was how well will he handle hard decisions that need to be made in a time of trouble? What will he do when the phone rings at 2 A.M. and he is told that thousands in his city are without power due to a massive ice storm. What will happen when a truck with explosives destroys a square block of his city? What decisions will he make when the town water supply has been laced with poisons?

On the flip side, 18 is considered old enough to go overseas with a rifle and make life and death decisions on a daily basis, a mayoral position with a city council to guide you shouldn’t be too much worse.

I dont think the Mayor of Muskogee fills the same roll as say the Mayor of Tulsa.. If I understand correctly the Mayor in Muskogee is just another elected person on the city board he gets to cast a tiebreaker vote in city business.

I do know that the Mayor of Muskogee is an unpaid position.

  8. GK says:

The Muskogee City Council is the legislative and quasi-judicial body of city government. Under the provisions of the City Charter of Muskogee the Council is composed of a Mayor and an eight member body. All Council Members are elected at large, two are elected from each ward of the city and the citizens elect a Mayor. The City is divided into four wards. Elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in April in each even numbered year. The next election is April 8, 2008. The term for Mayor is two years and Council Members serve for four years which are staggered. To be elected, a candidate must receive a majority (50% + 1) of the votes cast; if no candidate garners a majority, a run-off election is held between the two candidates that received the most votes. Runoff elections are held on the second Tuesday of May. The terms of Mayor and Members of the Council shall begin on the first Monday after their election.

The Mayor shall be recognized as head of the City government for all ceremonial purposes. The Council shall elect from its members a Vice Mayor and, if a vacancy occurs, shall become Mayor for the remainder of the unexpired term. The Mayor and Members of Council receive no salary or other compensation for their services.
