...but at any rate...(itch, itch)

What and where would you expect a 3rd party to rise from and represent? What platform would such a group have that would be strong enough to challenge the current 2 party system?

If the cycle holds true, I feel we are as a whole, reaching a level of complacency breeding into apathy.

As a strange stray thought, I wonder of the cycle could go in the other direction... Look at it in reverse and see what you think...

My thanks to Badfun, who answered my question. A 3rd party may abuse as badly as Reps and Dems. But your point is valid to me. We tend to ignore anything outside of the basic two choices... I wonder how well or poorly we would operate under a coalition government.

Nina, As a self-proclaimed conservative I felt it was necessary to attack the hypocrisy within the organization that claims (and consistently fails) to represent me. Now just because I am disgusted with the GOP doesn't mean I'm going to compound my disappointment by jumping into bed with an equally twisted party :) My trust in both parties has eroded continuously since the end of Reagan's second term. I salve my conscience by choosing on merit, not party affiliation, and by issues of law and governance, not solely on social issues (which I feel are better managed at the state level). The dark side may be fun, and the popular choice at the moment (much like all the partying I did in college and in the Corps) but I need results, not dreams. I'm not opposed to voting for individual Dems (or Reps), but I cannot vote for a party. Hmm... "murder machine making white dude shackles"? Too much for you, man... remember puff-puff-pass. Nina, you're a trip!

SgtWebb... in a sad, sad, scary way we think along similar lines. In Tyler's defense, he was a Scotsman... abused by Brits, poor golf scores, bagpipes, and haggis. That is a bondage that night be too much for me.

I think your historian was into S&M. The bondage at the beginning and the end of his cycles are a look into his mind.

And really if you're the bondager and not the bondagee is this really so bad?

Undo your murder machine making white dude shackles and join me on the dark side.

I think we are here "From complacency to apathy" I agree with all of what you say in this post. The GOP screams that the dem's have changed, but the Rebpub's have changed just as much. I fear that by the time Americans wake up and take a 3rd party seriously it will be way to late.
