Reasons to be a Writer
I’m exploring some reasons why people want to be writers. In my particular case, not all of these reasons apply, although I have to say the first and second items in the list are particularly compelling. Number seven also tends to resonate a little too much with me. Continue reading

Vampire Earth: Clever marketing or misnomer?
E. E. Knight’s Way of the Wolf is the first of the Vampire Earth novels. I almost didn’t give them a chance based on the series title. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that work doesn’t feature vampires at all, but rather an alien culture that dominates the Earth in the 21st century through the use of genetically engineered creatures that align (sort of) with urban fantasy tropes. Go See District 9
A brutal, cautionary tale on the nature of humanity, District 9 holds a mirror to our collective psyche and asks tough questions about how we would treat alien visitors who were stranded on our planet. The action is chaotic and breathtaking, and the acting is worthy of academy-award buzz. This movie is not to be missed. Continue reading

Summer Movie Rankings
I’ve taken the time to rank the movies I’ve seen so far this year. While my previous review of District 9 strayed into fanboy territory, you might be surprised at what this summer’s list reveals. Continue reading
Summary for Query Letter
Here’s the summary of the novel that I’m hoping to include in the query letters to agents. The instructions that I’ve received from various sources tell me that the description needs to be short, concise, and give potential readers a good idea about the content of the book. I need to know if you, as potential readers, would read a book given this description. If not, why not? Continue reading

Wordcounts, 2009 Reading List Updated
I’m making great progress so far on the Loss re-writes. I’ll keep the word counts on the right updated fairly regularly. 6,000 words per week is a twenty week novel. Here’s hoping I can hang on to that pace!

And for my next trick…
I’m going to be revisiting my first completed novel, which was titled Loss of Innocence. It started as a serial right here on this site at the launch of my blog (way back in 2006). I had initially conceived it as a near-earth military science fiction novel. It’s only as I’ve grown as a writer in the past few years that I’m able to recognize the work for what it is–abysmally bad. Continue reading

Hello, again!
I’ve just been through an intensive editing/re-writing process in preparation for resubmissions of my fantasy novel. I’ve taken a hiatus from the site to do so, but now that I’m done, I’m ready to start regularly posting again.
Hopefully you guys missed me while I was gone! Continue reading
