Vampire Earth: Clever marketing or misnomer?
E. E. Knight’s Way of the Wolf is the first of the Vampire Earth novels. I almost didn’t give them a chance based on the series title. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that work doesn’t feature vampires at all, but rather an alien culture that dominates the Earth in the 21st century through the use of genetically engineered creatures that align (sort of) with urban fantasy tropes. The Random (Book) Update
Pete has been reading some interesting things lately, among them Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law trilogy, C.C. Finlay’s The Patriot Witch, and Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book. All of them are great summer reads that bibliophiles should only miss at their peril. Continue reading

Turn Coat
Turncoat is the eleventh novel in the best-selling Dresden Files series. The main character, a wise-cracking wizard who daylights as a private detective, is written in a noir style with twenty-first century sensibility.
Is Harry Dresden less invincible that usual? Does his long-lost love return from her battle with vampirism? Can he and Thomas once again save the day despite the incredible odds arrayed against him? Continue reading

Book of the Year Nominees
2008 was an interesting year for books. We had new entries from John Ringo, David Weber, S.M. Stirling, and John Scalzi. While all of them were solid reads (and my issues with the Weber entry into the Safehold series are detailed … Continue reading

Short Review Catch-up
I’ve torn through several books in the sidebar over there since we last talked. Ringo’s Last Centurion deserves a brief mention. If you’re a fan of conservative politics and the intimate details of a military campaign, pick this one up. Give yourself … Continue reading

Short Review Goodness
I have to mention The Scourge of God one more time. I finished it recently, and I continue to maintain that S. M. Stirling is one of the most underrated authors in all of science fiction. I can’t really delve into … Continue reading

By Schism Rent Asunder
Weber fans, rejoice! The continuation of Off Armageddon Reef is available in stores now. There are definitely some good things about the novel (that I’ll get to in a moment) that should keep Weber fans satisfied. However, there are some … Continue reading

It's a Great Time for Science Fiction
You may have noticed that I’m reading the follow-up to David Weber’s Off Armageddon Reef, but that’s hardly the extent of the sheer number of great science fiction novels that are hitting the bookshelves right now. John Scalzi’s new novel, … Continue reading
