I'm not afraid of Obama as President. I'm only concerned about those who will be populating our bi-cameral legislature... that whether Republican or Democrat (or other party)... that such persons have the character and integrity to perform their duties to the betterment of their constituents and the country as a whole... not to themselves or the lobbyists tugging at their heels.

Obama could never have picked Hillary after all the bad blood between them. Besides, Hillary has nothing to gain playing second fiddle to Obama in the White House. If he loses, she can run again in four years. Truthfully, I think there is a whisper campaign against Obama that is being managed by the Clintons or one of their inner circle. It would make perfect sense.

Change for the sake of change reminds me of my Obama impression:

"Future hope change! Hopey hope future change hope. Welfare change future hope! Raise taxes hope change! Rich people bad! Hope change future hope!"

The semantic content of his speeches are exactly nil.

After doing some research into this, I think Biden was Obama's choice simply because he was trying to shore up a candidacy that was looking increasingly weak in the face of global realpolitik. He may be a guy that people can pin their "hopes" on domestically, but God help us if he's in the White House and Israel gives Iran an F-16 shaped yuck fou.

Pete: I don't know what the motivation is... all I can see is, with that ticket they are one flavor short of a Neapolitan. Let's hope it is as Chris suggests it could be, that Obama is looking for differing viewpoints. I'm not convinced that is the case. If Obama wanted a VP with a truly different opinion to act as a sounding board or counterpoint to his ideas, he'd chose someone from outside of his party. But the role of VP is not truly advisory. Should Obama be elected, look to his cabinet to judge the quality of his advisers.

Chris: What does history tell you (concerning "change for the sake of change")?

The Obama campaign doesn't hide the fact Obama would benefit from a VP with experience. To think that implies Obama doubted his own abilities is absurd.

I think the choice has two motivations. First, the president should surround himself with variety. That is admirable. Opposing viewpoints have value. "Yes men" have none. I read that Lincoln filled his cabinet with people that opposed him. Second, it seems both candidates think they can appeal to their weaker demographic by representing them with the VP candidate. In the grand scheme of things, I care very little about the VP. My friends feel the same way.

While we are talking politics, what does the phrase "change for the sake of change" mean? Does someone motivated by that vote for change he dislikes because he also dislikes the way things are. Or does he not care how things are nor what change he supports? That is, he just wants change.

I have read in several places that Biden has a hard time keeping his mouth shut and gets himself into trouble. I think that might be his biggest detriment when coupled with a decent orator like Obama.

He may bring experience, but if he bombs in public its not going to help.

Well, from the description of what would happen to you while you were "surviving", I'd rather die quicker. I guess it's a good thing I'd only last 1 minute and 5 seconds (but that seems about 1 minute and 4 seconds too long).

Vampires! Who believed in that shit! That was just something that mothers used to scare kids into behaving. I remember all the times I was threatened with being made undead because of my behavior (or lack of.) She warned me that the bat changlings were going to scoop me up and drain my blood, leaving me to face eternity as a lost soul or worse if I didn’t clean up my act.
I used to bite the inside of my lip to get blood to flow out the corners of my mouth. I loved pretending to be one of the dreaded undead and Mother would slap hell out of me (I think she was literally trying) to get me to stop tempting fate. Alas, had I only known what fate had in store for me, I would have been the best altar boy in our whole Jewish community. (The Catholics always seemed to know what to do with the exorcism bit, I never saw a movie with a Rabi performing one.)
I thought the old boy was just some rummy down on his luck, pan-handling for another bottle of mad-dog or something equally distasteful. He looked like an out of work thespian from an earlier era, dressed in a swallow tail coat, ruffled shirt, bow tie and a vibrant red cumberbund. The shirt had some rusty stains marring the upper chest area and he had a rosary made entirely of cloves of garlic hanging around his neck. That and the red syrupy liquid dripping from his near empty bottle of Mad-dog 2020 should have made me turn and run. But no! I had to get my kicks tormenting the poor old bastard.
As I passed him by, I stumbled into him causing him to fall into the street directly in the path of a runaway garbage truck. As he stared beseechingly at me from the path of the behemoth, I reached out my hand and yelled Quick! Throw me the bottle! There might be something left in it!
As incredible as it may seem, he did just that. I caught the bottle in mid-flight, immediately up ended it and drank the remaining liquid.
Just as the runaway garbage truck plowed into him, he cursed me. That was the blood of a vampire that I was taking to the abbey for analysis! You are forever doomed to eternity as one of the undead!
And that’s how I came to my bad end…

...but Rupert was a Pandora's box to Vlad's misbegotten brood. True, the alcoholic haze made Rupert irresistibly vulnerable and gave the feeding an extra kick. However, this grave digger's apprentice had sickle cell anemia, dropped acid, and was a test subject for drug trials, particularly diet pills and anti-depressants. If this wasn't bad enough, his flat-mate was slowly poisoning him with heavy metals.

He was not particularly religious or blessed with social graces. More than a few times he had been scolded by Father O'Reilly for quenching his thirst by drinking the holy water or washing his hands in the baptismal. The oppressive heat of the summer prompted the priest to forgive this wayward lamb. Surely he was just trying to keep cool... but he muddied the sacramental water and the basin smelled of sweat and newly turned earth.

Oblivious to attack as he stumbled home along his usual route, Rupert had unknowingly dispatched three denizens of the undead to their eternal damnation this month alone. Had it not been for the holy water, they would likely have only suffered severely bad trips and hangovers. Buffy, move aside! Clothed in muddy overalls, and armed with a shovel, liquid courage and a belch that could knock a buzzard off of a shit wagon, Rupert was judgment incarnate. He reigned supreme.

Very nicely done interview!!

In fact, given your style, I would find interviews with John Ringo and David Weber also interesting.

This post couldn't have come at a better time.. I'm just finishing off Michael Yon's new book and don't have anything queued up on the shelf.

Going to run by the neighborhood Borders at lunch and try to snag Scalzi's book.

It was a dark and stormy night when Rupert the grave digger's apprentice was last seen sober. You see vampires can only get drunk when drinking the blood of an alcoholic, and rupert was a walking brewery of mythic proportions....

Well, I'd say don't knock it until you write it. I challenge you to write a short story (when you have the time) that is compelling and unique about this glutted genre. Research and write something out of your comfort zone and see what happens. Then I'll take heed to your rants about how much vampires 'suck' with a little more credence.

For the record, I am NOT a fan of Vampire stories. I find the genre overwhelmed and very 'commercial'. But I realize others find delving into it a thrill/chill experience, much like horror films and roller coasters.

My wife reads "Vampire" books, however she claims none have out done Ann Rice's books.I have not read them but I have read "The servant of the bones" by Ann and I can understand why the others were so good, she does an amazing amount of research on the history of the time each story it set in, via art and culture as well.

We are witnessing history repeating itself... those of you who can remember 1975-76

A country at war (we left Saigon in 75)
An unpopular president, viewed by most as not legitimately elected to the post (Ford)
Rising inflation
Economic stagnation
Energy crises / foreign oil dependence
Nuclear threats growing
An aggressive and mobilized Soviet military
A new US President elected on the premise of "Change" (or as many have described, change for the sake of change)

At least Carter was committed to the Shuttle program. However, I believe that the first launch of the space shuttle was during Reagan's term (STS-1 was in April of 81... oddly, it took 12 years to get the first shuttle into orbit as the program took root in 1969 under Nixon). I don't trust Obama's designs concerning the space program; and I believe McCain more willing to carry on our space legacy. But funding NASA will largely be the responsibility of Congress, not the next president. True, it does help if the president is for such funding and signs as Congress requests.

Seriously though. I could care less about his flip flops, I just want to see something done to keep NASA afloat. If we elect Obama (and I personally hope we do) and he doesn't make good on his campaign promises, then hopefully we'll elect a better man 4 years later.

Nice Pete. My bro-in-law had one and I liked it so much better than my Glock that I ended up buying a PX4 which is a little bit smaller than the 92G. If we ever get to go shoot together you will have to give it a try. It's a whole lot easier to shoot then my .45 Kimber.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***
Don't read if you want no info on Clone Wars

Saw Clone Wars tonight... wasn't as bad as the reviewer made it out to be. But it wasn't noteworthy either. I left the film with a solid case of the blahs. I liked the interaction between Skywalker and a Togruta Padawan. The writers had so much to develop there but missed a lot of obvious points. The animation takes some getting used to... over-stylized, rather stiff and jerky, and with the quality of a late 90's video game. Hand-to-hand combat no longer has a fluid feel to it. No opening scroll... there was a cheesy opening narration as though they were trying to recapture the feel of the old movie serials. Yes, the Nawlins drag-queen Hutt was a bit much, as was the Laurel and Hardy routine with every battle droid. The "and a child shall lead them" motif (that Lucas and Spielberg soil themselves over) was in full effect. It wasn't a bad movie, but I felt is was more for kids under the age of ten. Don't see this for full price, unless you are a SW ubergeek.

Animation: C
Plot: C
Dialogue: C
Character interaction: B to A
Character development: C
Action: A

One of the strengths of the series is how well Rand is developed from innocent country boy to a messiah figure. I enjoy heroes that grow slowly, like Paul Atreides and Rand. Contrast that to the insta-prowess from heroes like Skywalker or Neo.

Robert's weak (weak, weak, weak) endings far out weigh the over emphasized antagonism between the sexes. Let's hope a translation to film can play a little fast and loose with last chapters of each book. The story's strongest draw was the appeal to my curiosity regarding how Jordan would resolve the dual nature of the Dragon's prophecy. Herald of doom and savior of the world? How would he resolve that? After 8 failed climaxes I lost faith Jordan would provide a satisfactory answer.

I'd rather see the mini-series take a few notes from LotR instead of be a made for TV clone. I am also VERY eager to see the first moments of the film project. Who hasn't longed to see the last few moments of Lewis to see how close it resembles their own big-budget imagination?

Much like BSG, it could be developed as a series instead of a movie. With such a format there would be a lot more room to develop the subplots and myriad characters. Also, if they use relatively unknown actors, they may be able to keep costs down.

Man, I would love to see this made into a movie, provided that it was done properly. Can you imagine the big wigs eyes getting all aglow thinking about the prospects of a 13-movie long series? Christ.

Of course, the cost of getting actors to play the thirty million starring roles in the book would probably outweigh the cost.

Your wife is hilarious! :) Maybe she should have offered to freeze the doggies first, making the chipping more like a Snoopy Snow Cone machine and less like a shower of putrefied organs and blood. Being less fluid, the pups will pack easier in those shoe-boxes. You could even pack them with dry ice in the shapes of milk-bones, steaks, chew toys, police badges, etc.

Sally sold those goodies to finance her Hutt language classes and her Tiberian space freighter with tractor beam. She's got a lot of marklar.

I like the position of a coach for the US women's gymnastics team (Karolyi) which is: remove all minimum age requirements. If an athlete has, by merit of skill, earned a spot at the Olympics, that athlete should be allowed to complete regardless of age.

I hated, no loathed, the last three SW movies... wooden acting, cutsie-poo creatures to draw the adolescent crowd, non-existent dialogue, plot-less action sequences, and a cheesy, ham-handed, fumbling, weak, and meaningless origin for Darth Vader... the biggest badass in the galaxy, the nexus of the Force, the hope of the Jedi is a whiny little pussy controlled by Force exuding bacteria and a Sith Lord with a massive need for Clorets? From Mannequin Skywalker to an homage to Frankenstein's monster... someone explain to me how and why his fall (as portrayed) was significant. My hopes were so high then, but quickly dashed by Lucas' abandonment of what made Star Wars great to begin with. I couldn't care less if the new version of the Clone Wars is a masterpiece or a vile steaming heap of poo. But I'll lay odds that it's the latter and no where near the former.

I have believed in a possibility of life elsewhere, though also believing in an infinitesimally small probability. I speak of and abundance and variety of life as we enjoy here on the big blue marble. There are so many narrow factors that have to be in place so that we can exist... an abundance of water, a protective atmosphere, the Van Allen belts, distance from the sun, angle of axis, a stabilizing moon, large mass planets within the system to deflect incoming missiles, etc. Even the orbits of our planets around the sun seem unique in the universe. Life could not survive the wild temperature and environmental extremes of even a slightly more elliptical orbit. It seems strange to me that scientists are just now discovering (or admitting) how unique our situation is.

Imagining you or Ms. Alba (or both) in a Cookie Monster suit is a mental image with enough humor to last me quite a while.

Cookie Monster did it all for the cookie

My wife recently received a call from someone raising money to cover burial expenses for police dogs. She offered them an assortment of shoe boxes and use of our wood chipper, but they balked at the idea complaining that she was "insensitive".

Excellent post/thread. Hollywood's obsession with extra-terrestrial life is more associated with their needs for a story antagonist than a deep seated need for intergalactic company. Nazis, communists, aliens, terrorists...

I read both... then wiped, dropped, and flushed. Celestine Prophecy wasn't bad, but it just didn't grab or appeal to me viscerally. Dianetics really confused me, as I didn't realize that it wasn't a story at first. I thought it was a strange other-worldly culture that was being described in a unique way (without a plot or characters). I guess it really is a strange other-worldly (or parallel universe) culture... and by the time I figured out that I had wasted my time, I decided to go back to reading myths with some semblance of class and style (that were infinitely more believable)... Edith Hamilton's "Mythology" (Greco-Roman myths with a smattering of Celtic ones too) as well as H.P. Lovecraft's short stories of horror and woe.

But back to the original subject... Pete, I think our anthropomorphism concerns not extra-terrestrial life in general, but our expectations for SENTIENT extra-terrestrial life. It seems that only space monsters break out of the public imagination for bipedal, anthropomorphic life... the blob, the thing, the aliens from "Alien", etc. I believe that we want to believe that there is some sentient anthropomorphic life-form out there to relieve a sense of being alone in the universe and perhaps that there is someone (not just something) out there who is just like (or very similar to) me. Collectively we are looking for a connection... hoping to peer into the galactic looking-glass and see ourselves reflected there.

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides: above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumbered and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages and will lie
Battening upon huge sea-worms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

Life on Earth comes in a myriad of forms other than bipedal (I believe that Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta is the most plentiful group in the Animal Kingdom), and almost unending variations... but all dependent upon carbon and water... and most dependent upon oxygen or carbon dioxide.

Assuming we retain a carbon-based form of life, but alter the means of respiration, energy consumption, and reproduction through the use of different elements/molecules, could such a life form develop and what would it look like (how would it operate)? For years scientists believed that no life could exist in the deep ocean that was not directly or indirectly dependent upon light/photosynthesis. However, whole colonies of many different creatures (tube worms, shrimp, mussels, etc.) were discovered to be living around thermal vents with their existence centered upon bacteria that convert hydrogen sulphide into food.

Pete, I thought the book was good overall, all though in my opinion (and that of others, I've discovered) it's overlong and the ending is weak. Chabon is an excellent writer, but it wasn't the best of the nominated books., Again, just my opinion.

Not to knock this way off the original point, but I've notice our mainstream sci fi shows all have that 'humanocentric' view. Just about any alien race portrayed is a biped with funny head ridges or skin color... That just seems to be the way most people view scifi... (Although some scifi authors are the notable exception.)

Sorry, please return to the topic at hand...

'Perchlorate can be used in rocket fuel and fireworks, due to its high oxidation potential and its relative stability.'

Fireworks on Mars? Cool... Ah, sorry, did it again. I'll stop now...

Blitz, ever shoot off any dragon fire rounds while in Vietnam? I have a Vietnam Vet friend of the family who was a USMC tank mechanic turned tank driver. He was issued a shotgun with dragon fire rounds (white phosphorous). I have seen him fire a few, and boy do they make a purty blast o'fire.

In the stone age... I qualified with the M-1 carbine in Basic Training at Lackland AFB. Before I was deployed to RVN, I had to qualify with the M-16 and the SW 38 spl revolver. Upon arrival in RVN, I qualified with the M-60 and the M-79. The blooper was one of my favorite weapons. I also launched about 500 slap flares while I was there... Got in some small trouble for firing an SKS on the berm off the edge of Bien Hoa airbase. Got lots of attention really quick... Blitz

I've always wanted to try a Garand. I hear they're very accurate at long ranges. I've thrown grenades too, and one cannot fire a MK19 or an M203 without those funky looking 40mm grenades. I've set up claymores, but they were only trainers, not live, so I've never seen a live fire of a claymore. FFE is a great thing to hear :), especially if you've targeted quickly... I hate bracketing. My favorite firing experience has been the Ma Deuce... butterfly trigger, amazing cyclical rate, and outstanding distance...

My father collected WWI and WWII era Lugers. So when I was a kid I fired a few of these officer's sidearms. An uncle of mine was a cop and allowed me to fire (on range) his .357 revolver (I think it was a Desert Eagle, but not sure). That is a scary powerful pistol.

Yes her energy plan does make some sense. Too bad the first time she read it was from the teleprompter and they had to splice together the full commercial from 98 takes. They had to keep stopping and explaining all the words to her besides hot, and splice out the pshhht sounds of air rushing from her ears when she thinks.

Well, I saw "Evil Dead"...

The DVD I rented had special features, including commentary by Raimi. I learned, after torturing myself by watching the film, that this first movie of the series was actually meant to be serious. It was an homage, in part, to the "classic" horror flicks. I definitely saw parts that reminded me of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Night of the Living Dead, and (of course) The Exorcist.

I was especially disturbed and disgusted by the forest rape scene. If the remaining films of the series proffer such as entertainment, I will not bother with them at all. There was really little camp in this film to enjoy, and as a serious horror movie it failed me on all counts except two: Raimi's camera usage was phenomenal, and he knows how to build suspense.

Things that made me laugh:

(1) Sumerian burial rituals in rural Tennessee
(2) The mocking of the demon possessed woman in the cellar "I don't wanna die!"
(3) Beheading the demon possessed girlfriend, creating a demon possessed talking head
(4) Moving the desk away from full length window in cabin in order to block the door
(5) Removing stave from demon possessed best friend's abdomen, resulting in a cork-removed-from-bottle sound followed by the whoosh and gurgle of escaping blood, gore, and bile.

Their license plate used to say (does it still?) "Taxation without representation."

I think it would be better if their license plate said "Government without intelligence."

It seems rather strange to me that the citizens of the district are ruled by a legislature in which they only have partial membership, and ruled by men that are not residents of what they hold legislative power over... somewhat like colonies and Parliament.

At this point the Congress should step in and fulfill its duty to the district. The law allowing home rule in DC specifies that laws in the district must be "consistent with the Constitution of the United States," and they "reserve the right, at anytime, to exercise constitutional authority as legislature for the District, by enacting legislation for the District on any subject."

The fact that this is funny to me is sad commentary on how little we expect out of Congress these days.

I was referring to the women in my extended family. I have no idea what the general female population thinks of Stirling's work, although you'd be hard-pressed read it and somehow think it's "male" oriented. I find it all faily even-handed without being overly, or overtly, PC.

My hypocrisy knows no bounds.

I mean really. Hot Lesbians beating the shit out of each other. Does it really get any better than that? If the Taliban had that movie on BluRay, they'd just give up their AK-47s immediately. Virgins in Paradise can't equate with quality cinema featuring naked flesh.

I have a set of all the X-Files shows, but I haven't watched more than a handful. My family (all of them, wife included) abhors anything remotely scary, so they're only "when the family is away" fodder.

Maybe I'll take a couple seasons with me next week to San Francisco...

Dez, be sure you have a few beers to go with the flick. Tell us about your favorite scenes/quotes.

I develop Video OnDemand systems. I have to watch lots of movies to test our software. About a year ago the fellas in our back office removed all our content save one movie: "Vampiyas". I was forced to watch this film 8 hours a day for more than a month:

Just so you know, SgtWebb... I never doubted you. I already suspected that you are a sick, sick man.

PS. Just rented Evil Dead and will watch it sometime before the weekend is over.

I like Vampire Lesbian Kickboxers. That is a great flick.

I'm not making it up. Check IMDB if you doubt me.

"I am especially intrigued by titles that appear to be serious, but I can’t help but wonder how they missed their ideal tone by so much."

I think that is the essence of camp... taking a subject or premise that is normally serious, or at least not comedic, and creating comedy that turns inward, poking fun at the movie (or genre) itself. I think that the more serious the title or premise, the funnier the campy-ness becomes.

I guess I'm going to have to rent a few movies this weekend. Bubba Ho-tep sounds like a good start.

If I had a few beers, I might have enjoyed how bad House of the Dead was. The film was sponsored by Sega, who were not happy when they learned the plot had nothing to do with the game. (As if the game's plot was worth retelling.) Uwe Boll actually spliced flashes of pixilated game footage as means of transitioning between scenes. The best line of the film: "So you did all this to live forever ...but why?"

Slapstick is a form of camp (Naked Gun, eh?). Slapstick films aim to be silly and meets the mark. I am especially intrigued by titles that appear to be serious, but I can't help but wonder how they missed their ideal tone by so much.

Speaking of beer and campy movies: Strange Brew is a little known gem. Just be sure to have plenty of beer and friends on tap.

Spinal Tap is camp, right? Can't leave that out of our thread.

Does anyone recall a show called Mad Movies that was featured on Nick at Night loooong ago. They took classic films, spliced and re-dubbed them to make new hilarious stories. Camp-o-licious! If anyone can find a copy of the show where they turned the original Night of the Living Dead into a surprise party, I will pay good money for a copy.
